Sarkozy Bakery on fire

In Kalamazoo, there’s no bakery as beloved as the one owned and operated by Judy Sarkozy. When my editor called me at 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning in 2012 and said it was on fire, I jumped out of bed and immediately went downtown. The building was a total loss. For the next 12 hours, I covered the story: I interviewed public safety officials and people who came to see the fire firsthand. I published photos and videos live from the scene, giving our audience a real feel of what was going on. After the fire was under control, I returned to the newsroom to research the history of the bakery for an article in Sunday’s newspaper about the fire and community impact.
